US 40 takes a more southerly route than it did at first. It originally followed, westbound, 620 W and 750 S. I believe the two segments of 750 S originally connected. It crossed Big Walnut Creek on what is now the second segment of 750 S. It also followed a segment of road since removed that connected the west end of 750 S to 725 S just west of where the railroad bed swings through. It then followed 725 S across 800 W and merged into the current alignment.

The National Road, according to my 1916 ABB, takes a less direct route. It enters on 620 W, but turns north onto 625 W (the north-south road not labeled on the map), where it crossed Big Walnut Creek. It then turned west onto CR725 S.
